organization solutions for renters

for those new to my blog, we recently sold our home and moved into a rental house. we'll be temporarily living in this home until june when we make our big move back to california. while i miss our home something fierce, i have enjoyed this house and have to confess....there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing this house really isn't *mine*. especially when it comes to the fun (not) issues of homeownership...like repairs and maintenance and landscaping work to keep up with or maybe dealing with a family of raccoons and squirrels that need to be evicted from the attic (true story - currently happening here in this house).

whatever the case, *we* don't have to pay for any of those issues.

but we are still living here.

or more accurately me and my crazy organization habits are living here.

whether you're in a rental for a few months or a longer period, most renters still want to live in an organized home. in a rental home or apartment you may be worried about putting holes in the wall, for example, because you risk losing some of your deposit when the time comes to move out. now that we are renters, i'm having those concerns myself. we have a great landlord and i'm not worried about things getting difficult once it's time to move out...but i get it, in college i had my fair share of awful landlord experiences.

to play it safe, i'll be utilizing temporary organization solutions here. and i'm going to share those tips for those of you that are renting too.

now, for most people, this issue wouldn't be a problem. but if you are one that visits a therapist once a week likes to have a completely clean kitchen countertop, come closer and listen up.

in our kitchen...

we don't have a built-in paper towel holder under a cabinet or the sink.

ok, so not a biiiiiig deal. but it was annoying me. i suppose what really annoyed me was that the roll had to sit on the counter...

and while it sat on the counter near the sink, it was constantly getting wet or dirty around the bottom of the roll....

i thought about just buying a holder on my own dime and adding it to the kitchen. after all, a holder isn't very costly. that is until i was walking through target and found this...

that's right! for less than $8 you can buy yourself a paper towel holder with command adhesive strips = no holes!...

ok. so i maaaay have done this....right there in the housewares section...

followed by this....

but, no one was watching and security wasn't called so we're good.

moving on, it was very easy to install this temporary paper towel holder under the sink with the included adhesive strips. all i did was clean the cabinet in the spot where the holder would hang...

adhere the strips to the holder...

and then press it onto the cabinet door...

i had to go sideways because of the lip around the inside of the cabinet.

after allowing it to fully adhere (package says wait 1 hour), the paper towels were ready to play hide and seek...

my counter tops never looked so happy...

if you're renting and on the look-out for temporary organization ideas, i hope this solution will help you out.

happy friday!

  1. So I haven't been on for awhile because I went back to work and my kids are so busy during bball season. Anyway, I had no idea you sold your home. It was so beautiful! We are temporarily in a rental too...FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS! We sold and were going to build, but have realized there are so many great deals out there with short sales and foreclosures. Now I am picky and want it in the perfect location close to the kids school. A house went up 2 months ago. It's a little out of our budget, but the realtor told us they are heading toward foreclosure and it will soon be drastically dropped! I've been praying!!

Good luck to you in your move. I can't wait to see what all you do to your new house!!!

  4. I love this Idea! We too are in a rental after moving into town from building our Dream home! Ours is NO where nearly as nice as yours! in fact it drives me insane how old and outdated this house is, but at least we're close to school and stores again and not out of town 40 minutes! Looking forward to having you closer here in California! ( p.s. Im a gator from SFSU! woohoo! )
